San Tan Valley Town Sales Tax Begins Oct. 1; Businesses Have Until Dec. 31 to License

This is a follow-up to earlier community-news coverage of the town's tax and impact-fee framework (July 2026), now that the sales tax has taken effect.

The Rates

The Town of San Tan Valley's sales tax took effect Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026. The general rate is 2.25%, added to the 6.7% already charged across the San Tan Valley area, for a combined 8.95% inside town limits. Outside town limits the rate stays 6.7%. Construction contracting is taxed at 5% and hotels at 4.25%.

What Is Taxed

The general rate applies to retail sales, restaurants and bars, rentals, utilities and use tax. Food for home consumption is excluded from the Oct. 1 change; a separate 2.25% tax on retail food for home consumption starts Jan. 1, 2027. Construction contracts signed before Oct. 1 may qualify for “pre-existing contract treatment,” and the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) directs those contractors to contact the town.

Who Collects It

ADOR administers the tax. Businesses charge it and report it on their transaction privilege tax (TPT) returns to ADOR, which passes the town's share to the town. ADOR is the authority for account questions and amounts owed.

Licenses Businesses Need

Businesses inside town limits need two licenses:

  • A state TPT license from ADOR. The 2026 town fee on it is $0 for businesses holding a TPT license by Sept. 30, 2026, and $2 for businesses first obtaining one Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2026. All businesses inside town limits pay a $2 town fee on the TPT license for 2027.
  • A town business license from the town, $50 for most businesses.

Deadlines and Process

Licenses can be processed starting Oct. 1 through the town's permitting portal. Businesses have until Dec. 31, 2026 to complete licensing, and those who sign up during the early period are covered through Dec. 31, 2027. ADOR is adding the town code “SZ” to existing TPT licenses of businesses inside town limits and will mail updated licenses; tax is owed from Oct. 1 even if the updated license has not arrived. Businesses should add San Tan Valley as a reporting jurisdiction for each location in AZTaxes.gov, and ADOR advises reprogramming point-of-sale systems.
